“Cancer” is a scary word for most people – it certainly was for me. When my mother was diagnosed with cancer, it felt as though my entire world was falling apart. In addition to the emotional distress my family and I were going through, we were also grappling with fear, confusion and uncertainty about the road ahead.
I soon realized that a lot of the anxiety we were experiencing was due to lack of information. While we had access to the best medical care, our clinical team simply did not have the bandwidth to help us understand the realities of our situation and we were largely left to our own devices. I remember feverishly going through various search engines at all hours of the day and night, poring through medical journals, articles and blogs to learn everything I could about my mother’s illness. As a person with a non-clinical background, it was immensely difficult to figure out whether the information I was reading was
From a credible source
Relevant for my mother’s case
As a cancer patient, my mother was keen to understand everything she could about her disease. She wanted information about
Her specific type of cancer and its causes
Various treatment options and possible side effects
Living life as fully as possible while coping with cancer
As caregivers, my family and I yearned for resources and support that could help us navigate the difficult world of
Making treatment decisions
Managing the financial aspects of care
Coping with our own emotions
My family and I struggled to find the information we were looking for – resources that were credible, easy to understand and empathetic towards our situation, while also keeping in mind the unique Indian context. As I spoke to more patients, hospitals and healthcare professionals both in India and overseas, I came to realize that thousands of patients, caregivers and family members face similar challenges every day. I had to do something about it – and thus, the Solis Knowledge Portal was born.
